QUESTION · EXTRA HOURS

What kind of cameras were used on the boats and how are you getting all those feeds into the cloud?

THE PANEL'S ANSWER

Noted that mimoLive now has native SRT source support on Mac, eliminating the need for external FFmpeg servers previously required for SRT ingest.

Zach JeffersPANELIST

Described using GoPros feeding into custom encoder boxes over Starlink, with four streams per boat (chesty cam, sonar, two GoPros) running one to two megabits each, using SRT transport and relying on connection quality and latency management for reliable delivery.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

From the transcript.

Machine-transcribed, so it may contain errors. Every timestamp opens the episode at that second.

22:33restream or something like that it looks like i mean i'm not seeing any breakup is is this um in an area where cell towers are nearby or is this starlink or what's these are so each boat Let's see if I can find another shot of the boats. You can see here on the boat right here is one of my client's encoders built into one

22:54of the poles in the back of the boat. And that white box that's sticking up near the rear there, that's a Starlink Mini. And then each of the encoders, technically speaking, we were running four different streams off that Starlink for each boat. So you had a chesty cam, you had the sonar, and then the two GoPros. And they were running all about one to two meg each.

23:21Do you do something like a 20-second delay just in case one of the boats falls off the radar? No, we have so many options to go to. Like, we're not really worried about it. Everything was sub-second latency, so it was pretty straightforward. forward. Pretty much everything was in sync for the most part via the encoder using, you know, STI data. So for the most part, most everything was in sync.

23:53When you say STI data, that allows those to all, the timing is realigning back up when it, so yeah, because it's just a single stream, right? So it's S-E-I, Sam, Edward, Indigo. go. And there is, it's basically embedding the timestamp in the, I just realized I might not necessarily have the rights to be broadcasting this much of this video. So I'll go back to my

24:18camera. We'll just have to do an ad for Bass Pro Shops. And so they won't give us a take. So the SEI data, basically the timestamp embedding into the frame sequence, right? So So on the decoding side of the, on the listener side of the SRT connection, if you're trans, depends on which platform you're on. On Nimble, there's a NDI transcoder that can take the SCI data and resync the feeds.

24:50But all the feeds have to be going through that encode to work. And then there's a buffer, basically you tell it how many frames or how many, how big of of a buffer you want them to all fit within as your your guidance on on how much to allow them to drift from each other yeah i've done that with um srt mini server where the sei time aligns back

25:13uh but that's expensive compared to it's that you're doing something roll your roll your own this is well it's a mobile server so you're you're paying the technically speaking it's It's open source, but the server you're paying for the infrastructure, interfacing dashboard and the transcode licensing. One nice thing is our friend Jonas with CloudFlex has this built into their product. And so you don't have to know how to run that server and configure everything.

25:43You can just work with him. I've tried. And spin up a flow engine and yeah. You can spin up a flow engine there and then make it all work on your end. And I'm not sure if he has an SEI data checkbox yet, but that's something I can talk to him about. So this was done in CloudFlex? Not this show, but after this show, I realized that building infrastructure on client accounts is probably not the future for me.

26:08So I'll be spinning up my own CloudFlex to kind of help also push the limits of CloudFlex and help Jonas make a better product. So that's kind of my future. future. It's cool. I love it, man. Thanks for coming on and sharing this story because it's, it's what we did. I mean, and it's, and it's, you know, if we go to do a trade show or something

26:29like that, the lessons that you learned from out in the field, uh, is that you? And so I did a little time lapse of me working the show. You guys always see the stuff behind me. This is, this is kind of how I use it in my day to day, but, um, I kind of pushed the limits of my, my Starlink connections and how to take some things off of my left screen there. But for the

26:47the most part you can see that the top left monitoring all the programs so that all shows that are happening that's awesome you can see on the top right i have my server monitoring happening checking making sure i'm watching my loads and things like that very cool and this is all out in spokane washington just off out in the middle of nowhere yeah and if anybody says
