What computers are you using on the show today, and what are their functions?
ASKED BY · Jerry Hoyle · WESLEY CHAPEL, NORTH CAROLINA · 12 SEP 2026 · ▶ 00:24:31
Using Dell Inspiron i5 laptop for main operations and 8-inch Windows tablet for comms; using GMK Tech R5 mini PC for graphics and Rodecaster Video S for switching and compositing.
Using older 11th gen Alienware i7 with 128GB RAM and RTX 3070 running Zoom ISO and accessing other machines via Splashtop; also runs Mac Studio M2 Ultra and iMac Pro for cloud coding and testing.
Using M4 Mac Mini as main computer driving LG quad display and vertical chat display; running MIMO Live, NDI, Claude, and Docker; memory constraint (16GB) causes performance limitations.
Show infrastructure includes multiple M1/M2 Mac Studios for Zoom ISO and encoding, Dell Optiplex 3080s for various graphics and switching tasks, and numerous mini PCs donated for office hours operations.
Using seven computers including M2/M4 Mac minis and M3 Max MacBook Pro; dedicating single machines to single tasks (bit focused companion server); considering refurbished hardware to save costs.

24:30I have many computers, but in this home office, I've tried to force myself into using just one. So I have an Apple TV, I have an audio mixer, a physical audio mixer from Allen & Heath. I have all the supported things. But fair to say I'm using all the ports on my M4 Mac Mini. It is connected to a display on my right side where I have the LG Quad display
24:59where I have both camera feeds coming in, the multi-views coming in from the Constellation ATEM I have in front of me. it's two of the displays from the m4 mac mini and the third display is a vertical one where i have all the chats etc on my left side so and it's also controlling my um my prompter view running on an ipad as the as the fourth display actually this this small box uh is is amazing at that type of
25:30work and sometimes I also run Meme Live and I recently started to get into the thing of NDI and I'm trying to see if that is also feasible using this machine and it seems to be working and chewing through it. At the same time I'm using my computer for Claude, sometimes I'm running Docker and in the case that you remember when I'm having problem here it's because of everything is
26:00chewing up my small memory. This is a 16 gig only, so that's the memory, not the compute of that machine. So I just regret getting too few gigabytes in that machine. If I had 32, it would probably be breeding a lot easier. Cool. All right, let's go to Courtney. Well, let's see. I'm using an old Dell Inspiron, Inspiron, however they pronounce it,
26:29i5 multi i5 intel with 12 I don't remember how many cores it has, more than 4 it has 8 cores I think with 4 power cores and 4 efficiency cores and no Apple cores I'm also using a tablet Windows tablet PC that's an 8 inch tablet over here on my left that I use for comms. So I'm using the touch version of Unity comms over there
27:04so that I can be in touch with those behind the scenes back there and they can yell at me all the time. And so just with those two computers, the only two computers, I do have one of the, I don't know if I can hold it up and I have a rope to hang myself with. I do have one of these little GMK Tech R5s over here
27:24that I was going to use for graphics. I do have it fed in, but it's not coming up right now. And I use the RODECaster Video S for switching and doing all the magic compositing and things that I'm showing you. And I just use the extra screens. I have the screen, three video outputs out of a Dell go into the Rodecaster and to an external ATEM mini to provide inputs that I can switch between here.
27:58But I try and keep things compact because it's in my living room. And I have a central workstation that's all glommed together in the space of about four square feet. Right. And I know, Courtney, you've reviewed and you've purchased many of those little mini PCs, the little fanless ones over the years. Do you keep those? Do they have active duty doing something or do you sell them?
28:22Like, what do you do with all that? I used to use them for work, for providing, you know, for feeds for, you know, in a set where you'll have, you know, 20 displays or something like that. You have to have something animated going on on the screens, and you have to be able to remotely control them. So I would use them for that kind of stuff, and I wrote custom software to do that.
