QUESTION · SATURDAY Q&A

How does a parfocal lens work and why are these so much more expensive?

ASKED BY · Alexander Knight · PORT COQUITLAM, BRITISH COLUMBIA · 24 OCT 2026 · ▶ 00:57:42

THE PANEL'S ANSWER
Courtney

Parfocal lenses maintain focus while changing focal length through separate optical elements that move proportionally with zoom; this adds complexity and cost versus still camera lenses which require refocusing after zooming.

57:41Nicely done. Courtney, right back to you. What do you know about these things? Well, par-focal lenses maintain their focus as you change focal length. They're typically used in video cameras because when you zoom in, you don't want it to go out of focus. You know, you zoom in, you set your focus, and then you zoom back out again, and it will maintain its focus throughout the range of that magnification or zoom.

58:04And the way it does that is it has a separate set of elements that change as you change the focus as you change the magnification. So there's a separate set of optical elements inside the lens which are moving in proportion to your zoom. So that's why they're more expensive, and that's how you use them. Typically, you'll find non-parafocal lenses and still lenses

58:31that are used for still cameras, so that if you zoom in on something, then you're going to have to focus, and you zoom back out, then you might have to refocus again. that's all I know about them. Well, yeah, they're obviously a lot more expensive to manufacture, but I've always wanted one, could never afford one, and I'm always jealous. Anytime I see a movie and you see a really fast zoom in,

58:55it's like it's perfectly in focus. It's amazing. All right, next up, what do we got, Courtney? All right, next one comes in from Jackson Shafire in Tameel. They do. Anybody have any experience with Teradek wireless transmitters? They claim to be zero delay video. And here's a link to Teradek. Ronny? Yeah, so I've used Teradek products for a long time. So we have a lot of older equipments from the cubes, etc.
