QUESTION · SATURDAY Q&A

Anybody have any experience with Teradek wireless transmitters? They claim to be zero delay video.

THE PANEL'S ANSWER
Guy

Teradek makes good products but the landscape has changed with DJI entering the market; for most use cases, rent rather than buy unless doing frequent wireless work; always test extensively before shows as environment affects performance, and consider backup wireless systems.

Ronnie

Teradek products have extremely low latency down to 1 millisecond or less; they automatically adjust buffering based on transmission distance; latest models seen at IBC are exceptional.

58:55it's like it's perfectly in focus. It's amazing. All right, next up, what do we got, Courtney? All right, next one comes in from Jackson Shafire in Tameel. They do. Anybody have any experience with Teradek wireless transmitters? They claim to be zero delay video. And here's a link to Teradek. Ronny? Yeah, so I've used Teradek products for a long time. So we have a lot of older equipments from the cubes, etc.

59:26So they are not being used these days, but we still have them. And even back in the days, they were kind of quick and they have become quicker and quicker and quicker. quicker and the latest one I saw last year at IBC in Amsterdam was just mind-blowing I think they are as low as one milliseconds or maybe even less it also has something to do with uh with the

59:51coverage so if you're having a longer distance it automatically adjusts so that you can have a have a buffer that is automatically managed but the last one I saw is amazing Amazing. And Guy? Yeah, so I've owned a lot of Teradek gear. I've also owned the cubes, and I was a reseller for Teradek. And they make great products, but the landscape has changed quite a bit over the years,

1:00:19especially with DJI entering into the market space. It depends on how far you want to go and do you really need zero latency because all of these seem to add a little bit of latency. We have a production next week where I'm looking at what Omar Gadon, who he does MMA boxing style events, and he has the DJI product. And so we're going to rent this one.

1:00:45And I know Jeff Keithley's rented these ones in the past. So with the monitor, it'd be $336. And this thing will go miles line of sight. So you're familiar with their drones. That's where that technology comes from. The one that Omar has side by side is this one that we're probably just going to buy this, the Axiom Cineview for $749 and rent, and then we'll

1:01:07have two and we're going to have them running both at the same time. But the Teradek is also just a rental item, I would say. Unless you're doing a lot of this stuff, I wouldn't recommend buying them because the higher end ones, of course, you want the best because there's nothing worse than buying like a Hollyland or something and having it fail. Ask me how I know. So you

1:01:27You cheap out on these things and you're going to get burned. So the big thing is they always test great when there's nobody there. But when the thousand people show up, then all of a sudden all those water bags start to soak up your transmission. And the next thing you know, you're getting dropouts. So if you can, run a cable as far as you can with the receiver closer to wherever the operator is going to be.

1:01:48And then it's just a shorter hop. So cable close as you can. And actually on this production, we're even going to have a wireless cellular as well. So we're going to have it split. So you could go into, look at your signal chain and see if you can go out from the camera into the wireless transmitter and then loop back out and go to another transmitter. So then you have two at the same time, if the rig will support it, because these guys are going to have a backpack, so we can weigh them down a bit.

1:02:16But if you're loading it all on top of a rig, be aware of your power, your cabling, and just the rig itself. How is it going to hold that transmitter? Because you may run into other issues with that as well. The worst is, you know, that thing dying or falling off in the middle of some heated battle, I call it. All right, next question.

1:02:35Next question comes in from New York City. Brody Hefner says, NAB New York City reported that more than 60% of those registered were first-time attendees. Is it becoming the National Association of Streamers rather than broadcasters? Corny. In a short word, yes. You know, originally it was limited. National Association of Broadcasters was limited to people with broadcasting licenses or networks of broadcasters. So nowadays they accommodate the streamers, which are becoming a larger portion of the consuming audience that is distributed over the Internet.
