QUESTION · SATURDAY Q&A

iPhone 18 Pro has a variable aperture. What can't the iPhone still do that Apple needs to add next?

ASKED BY · Paul Wall · AUSTIN, TEXAS · 19 SEP 2026 · ▶ 00:52:50

THE PANEL'S ANSWER

Apple should add true optical 5-10X zoom with optical image stabilization, or make it a dedicated point-and-shoot camera with a foldable display, similar to what they offered with the Duo form factor.

Guy CochranPANELIST

Samsung had a dedicated camera-phone with LTE and 4G connectivity 13 years ago that could edit and upload video while mobile; Apple historically waits to ensure superior user experience rather than being first to market, as evidenced by Newton patents that eventually enabled the iPhone.

John WallacePANELIST

The iPhone 18 Pro now has 8X optical zoom, but remains limited by tiny sensor size and relies heavily on computational photography; while impressive for a pocket device, it won't replace professional full-frame cameras and still performs significant post-processing despite the new variable aperture.

52:30almost done for today but Courtney let's go to the next question yeah for uh for I read the next question I just want to let guy know that Vladimir Putin enjoys watching the cows out in your pasture in the morning he eats his breakfast you didn't know that Claude was doing that for you but hey those cameras are going out next up is Paul Wall who's in Austin Texas he says iPhone 18 Pro

52:54has a variable aperture what can't the iPhone still do that Apple needs to add next well there's always something to add go ahead Courtney well you know it's all about the camera now with Apple I think they need to take the next step and make a very optical 5x zoom on their cameras or just do bite the bullet and make it a point and shoot camera with the phone on the back

53:21of it you know so it has a fold-out screen on the back I'm gonna like the duo and it's basically a point and shoot, you know, a pocketable with a 5X or 10X optical zoom on it, optical image stabilization, you know, all those great things we had in micro four thirds cameras, just make it a camera and you can make phone calls on it if you want, but you know, just take the final step and

53:47make it a camera. What are these phone calls that you speak of, Courtney? I don't know. Well, now we just have ai translate your text into a voice which it phone calls for you yeah so so the new i haven't i did watch the keynote they they do actually provide on the 18 uh pro there is an 8x optical zoom on it uh what's the sense does anyone know the sensor size i don't know if they disclose

54:17the sensor size it shows the aperture i don't see the the other issue with the iphone that people don't always seem to talk about is they go, oh yes, it's got aperture blades now. So we can, but we're just remember a lot of, because the sensor size is so tiny on these things, they're still doing a lot. And I mean, a lot of computational photography. And I don't mean that

54:40to diminish the incredible engineering work that Apple has done on these and continues to impress me year over year with the camera updates. And it's incredible that what they were able to do and put into that tiny package. And I'm definitely going to be due for a new phone this year. So I'd like to try this out. And I think it's cool that you can play with, you know,

55:02more depth of focus, a shallow depth of focus or having, you know, things more in focus in the background. But there's still a lot of computational photography. And it's, the camera on these phones is not meant to replace a professional full frame camera. Like it is like, don't pretend like that's going to somehow be a full frame camera with an expensive lens.

55:28It's not going to be that. It's not ever going to be that. But I think for a device that's in your pocket, it does take truly exceptional photos. And the examples that I've seen of the 18 Pro look pretty impressive. And I'm sure actual experienced photographers have probably tested it already, have some really good things to say about it. But Guy, what do you think?

55:50I just wanted to reply to what Courtney's idea was because there was actually a phone camera. I don't know if anybody remembers it, but it looked like this. And I had one. I still have it. It's somewhere buried in a box. Samsung did it years ago. Yeah. And so I actually took this to NAB one year. And this is the result. You could actually edit on the thing.

56:10So I had this in After Effects done and it was ready to go. And I shot this interview with Dan Chung. So I edited this while I was walking. I trimmed the clip, and then I shot it with that camera before the show opened. So this was like the first unveil. I had some heads up that this camera was going to get released.

56:35This was, let me see how long ago this was, 13 years ago. But basically, I interviewed Dan Chung. Let's see, he comes up here in just a second. so it just so happened that my friend dan chung is a magazine reviewer he gave me like the first scoop of what was going on with that camera and this video got like 9 000 views pretty quick
