HDR: Objective Color Metrics

With new capabilities on our TVs we discovered we need to objectively measure the performance characteristics of color and light. Michael Drazin and Jim Toten return welcoming Chris Seeger for this session who pioneered and oversaw the culmination of several organizations work to develop this methodology.

Chris Seeger is NBCUniversal’s Director of Advanced Content Production. He has been focused on live UHD-HDR-SDR production for 7 years. In collaboration with NBCU Sports, Cromorama and Mike Drazin, he developed the NBCU LUTs for use in Single-Master UHD Productions. In order to verify the quality of the final broadcast conversions between HDR and SDR, and collaborating with industry experts, he developed tools for objective color metric measurement based on international standards.

Michael Drazin is a broadcast technical innovator who is leading the implementation of new technology that improves storytelling as well as the consumer experience. He has been part of the planning and execution of events across the globe at all scales.

Jim Toten is a creative technologist who specializes in engineering solutions for complex problems in the broadcast industry. He has played a pivotal role in the success of productions from feature films, broadcast production, live concerts and everything in between.

Audio Description with Joel Snyder

Audio Description (AD) makes visual images accessible for people who are blind or have low vision. Using words that are succinct, vivid, and imaginative, describers convey the visual images from performing arts, media, museums and many other activities that are not fully accessible to a significant segment of the population (more than 32 million Americans experience significant vision loss).

Dr. Joel Snyder, Ph.D. was one of the first audio describers, a pioneer in the development of audio description. He began describing theater events
and media in 1981; for six years, he led a staff that produced description for nationally broadcast films and network series including “Sesame Street” broadcasts and numerous feature films. Snyder has worked with description and trained describers in more than 40 states and in over 60 countries, including a month-long Fulbright residency in Greece in 2019. In 2014, the American Council of the Blind published Dr. Snyder’s “The Visual Made Verbal: A Comprehensive Training Manual and Guide to the History and Applications of Audio Description.” It is available in Braille, as an audio book, and in six languages–a 7th, an Italian edition, will be released in the fall of 2023. He is the President of Audio Description Associates, LLC with clients world-wide (www.audiodescribe.com) and the Founder of/Senior Consultant to American Council of the Blind’s Audio Description Project (https://adp.acb.org/), an initiative he founded with ACB in 2009.
