Sonnet OBS broadcast countdown timer
Create a single file called index.html containing a complete broadcast countdown timer for use as an OBS browser source, with all HTML, CSS and JavaScript in that one file and no external libraries.
Layout: the top of the page is a fixed stage exactly 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall with a fully transparent background. This stage is what OBS will capture. Centred on the stage, show a very large countdown timer in MM:SS format (switch to H:MM:SS if an hour or more remains) using bold tabular figures with a subtle dark outline or drop shadow so it stays readable over video. Directly below the 1080-pixel line, add an operator control panel on a dark visible background — this area sits outside the OBS crop and is only seen by the operator in a normal browser or the OBS Interact window. Label the boundary clearly with a thin line and the caption "OBS crop line: nothing below this is broadcast".
Controls, in the panel: number inputs for starting minutes and seconds; Start, Pause and Reset buttons; quick preset buttons for 5, 10 and 15 minutes; +1 min and −1 min buttons that adjust the time even while running; and a toggle button that switches the stage background between transparent and a grey checkerboard for previewing transparency.
Behaviour: the timer must be drift-free — compute remaining time from a target end timestamp rather than decrementing a counter, so it stays accurate over long runs. While more than 60 seconds remain the digits are white; at 60 seconds or less they turn amber; at 10 seconds or less they turn red. When the timer reaches 00:00 it stops and the digits change to a muted grey. Reset returns to the value in the number inputs and restores the white colour. Pause freezes the remaining time exactly; Start resumes from it. Guard against invalid input (negative numbers, blank fields) by treating them as zero.
Keep the code clearly commented so a beginner can ask follow-up questions about how each part works.

Timer counts down correctly. Now let's test pause, adjust, and the low-time color states quickly via JS (fast-forwarding by manipulating remainingMs directly would break drift-free design, so instead I'll set a short time and let it run).

Reaches zero, stops, and turns grey as specified. All core behaviors verified: drift-free countdown, color states (white/amber/red/grey), pause/reset, and the finish condition. The file is ready at index.html.
Summary: Created a single-file index.html with a 1920×1080 transparent OBS stage showing a large centered MM:SS/H:MM:SS countdown (white → amber ≤60s → red ≤10s → grey at zero), plus an operator panel below a clearly marked crop line with minute/second inputs, Start/Pause/Reset, 5/10/15-min presets, ±1 min live adjust, and a transparency-preview checkerboard toggle. The timer computes remaining time from a fixed end timestamp (not decrementing), so it won't drift, and invalid/blank inputs are treated as zero. Verified in-browser that start/pause/reset, color transitions, and the zero-stop behavior all work correctly.
We need to be able to control this timer from the keyboard, so please suggest some suitable keys for the main functions and then implement them
Thought
Good call — a few sensible bindings, avoiding conflicts with typing in the number inputs:
- Space — Start / Pause (toggles)
- R — Reset
- ↑ — +1 min
- ↓ — −1 min
- 1 / 2 / 3 — 5 / 10 / 15 min presets
- B — Toggle transparency checkerboard preview
I'll wire these up now, guarding so they don't fire while the operator is typing in the minutes/seconds fields.

Now the JS: add a keydown handler that toggles Start/Pause on Space, and maps the other keys, while ignoring keystrokes typed into the number inputs.

The title "BREAKING NEWS" appears centered at the top of the stage, above the timer, updating live from the panel's new "Stage title" field, and clears cleanly when the field is emptied since it's just mirrored via textContent.
Summary: Added a "Stage title" text input to the operator panel and a #titleDisplay element on the stage (centered horizontally, positioned above the timer, styled with the same dark outline/shadow treatment for on-video readability). It updates on every keystroke via an input event listener, is excluded from keyboard shortcuts like the other fields, and long titles are clipped with an ellipsis rather than wrapping or overflowing the 1920px stage.
I'd like to see a spectacular animation happen when the count reaches zero. What would you suggest? Don't make any changes until I confirm what I want you to do...
Thought
A few options that would work well as a canvas/CSS-only "zero hour" moment (no external libraries needed):
- Burst + flash — the MM:SS digits scale up and flash white, then a radial shockwave ring expands outward and fades, with a handful of confetti/particle bursts in your accent colors. Punchy, reads well even compressed on stream, moderate build effort.
- Particle explosion (canvas) — a full-screen
<canvas>overlay spawns 100–200 small colored particles (or shapes) from the timer's position that explode outward with gravity/fade, like fireworks. Most "spectacular," slightly more code and CPU, but still trivial for any streaming PC. - Pulse/glow rings — simpler: concentric rings pulse outward from the timer a few times while it flashes red→white, minimal motion. Cleanest and least likely to distract from other stream elements, but least "wow."
All three would auto-trigger the instant the timer hits 00:00, run for a few seconds, then settle back to the muted grey "done" state. I'd lean toward option 2 (canvas particle burst) for genuine spectacle, or option 1 if you want something punchy but lighter-weight.
Which one (or a mix) would you like, and roughly how long should it run (e.g. 2–4 seconds) before settling?
Let's go with the particle explosion...
Thought
Implementing the canvas particle explosion now — I'll use sensible defaults (a ~3 second burst of ~150 particles in white/amber/red/gold, radiating from the timer's position with gravity and fade-out) and flag it clearly if you want to tweak duration or colors after seeing it.

Now the particle burst is clearly visible — colored particles (white/amber/red/gold) radiating outward from the timer, fading and arcing under gravity, while the "00:00" digits have turned grey as designed. This confirms the explosion is working correctly.

Confirmed — the explosion re-fires correctly on a fresh run after a previous reset, with 22,342 non-transparent pixels mid-burst. All behaviors check out:
- Fires exactly once when the timer hits 00:00
- ~150 particles burst outward from the timer's position in white/amber/red/gold, arc under gravity, and fade over ~2–3 seconds
- Canvas clears itself fully once the burst finishes — no lingering artifacts
- Reset instantly cancels any in-progress burst and clears the canvas
- Starting a new countdown re-arms it so the next zero fires again
The particle explosion is implemented in index.html — pure canvas/JS, no external libraries. Take a look and let me know if you'd like the burst bigger/smaller, faster/slower, or a different color palette.

The layout looks correct: the title "FinalCountdown Live" sits at the top, "Hello there!" appears as a fading banner directly below it, and the timer (now red at ≤10s) remains centered below both — all inside the 1920×1080 broadcast area. The operator panel below the crop line shows the new "Timed messages" textarea with the format hint.

Everything works as designed and tested. Summary of what was added to index.html:
- A "Timed messages" textarea in the operator panel, in a YouTube-chapter-like format:
MM:SS message text(orH:MM:SS) per line, with#comment lines and blank lines ignored, and a hint caption explaining the format. - Each entry's time is remaining time on the countdown — e.g.
05:00 Get ready!fires the instant 5:00 is left. - Triggered messages appear as a fading banner directly below the title, staying visible for 5 seconds before fading out over half a second.
- Messages re-arm on every fresh run (Start from idle, or Reset) — same behavior as the particle explosion — so a repeated countdown replays the full schedule.
- Malformed lines are silently skipped rather than breaking anything.
One edge case worth knowing: if a message's time is longer than your countdown's total starting duration (e.g. a 10:00 entry on a 5-minute countdown), it'll fire immediately when you hit Start, since the remaining time is already below that threshold the moment the timer begins. Let me know if you'd rather that case be suppressed instead.
i would like to be able to see the list of messages and times in the display area, with the current (most recently fired) message highlighted in bold with red text as opposed to the other items which will be in a regular black font.
I'll add this as an operator-panel list (light background so black text reads clearly — the OBS stage stays broadcast-only). It'll show every parsed entry with its time and message, and the most recently fired one in bold red; the rest stay black.

Done and verified. Added to index.html: a live schedule list under the "Timed messages" textarea in the operator panel — a light card so the plain black text reads clearly. It lists every parsed entry (time + message text), stays in sync as you type, resets to all-plain on Start/Reset, and highlights the most recently fired message in bold red while everything else stays regular black. This list is operator-only (part of the panel below the OBS crop line), not shown on the broadcast stage itself.
This list is meant to be visible through OBS so please place it under the countdown time
Good catch — I'll move the list onto the broadcast stage itself, positioned under the timer. Since the stage background is transparent, I'll keep the black/red text but add a white outline so it stays legible over any video, similar to how the timer and title are outlined for readability.

The operator panel still holds the editable textarea; the list itself is only rendered on stage now, live-updating as messages fire.

Done — the on-stage schedule list rows are now left-aligned, and the time portion of each entry uses a monospace font (Courier New/Consolas/Menlo) with a reserved-width column so times line up neatly regardless of digit count. Changes are in index.html.

Now let's update the parsing function — the core change from "time message" to "time, person, action".

Good, renderScheduleList() already uses message.text, which now holds the combined "Person: Action" string — no further changes needed there. Let's verify this end-to-end in the browser.

Parsing works correctly — commas inside the action text are preserved, and malformed lines are silently skipped. Let's verify the countdown trigger and fade banner.

This confirms the full flow: the second task "Bob: Cue music" has now fired (fade banner showing it, its row bold red), and the first task "Alice: Check the camera, please" has reverted to plain black — exactly matching the confirmed behavior. The panel's textarea label now reads "Task schedule" with the CSV-style placeholder and updated hint. Let's reset the viewport.

Summary of changes to index.html:
- The textarea is now labeled "Task schedule", with a placeholder and hint reflecting the new
time, person, actionCSV format. - Parsing splits only on the first two commas, so the action field can contain its own commas without quoting.
- Malformed lines (missing time/person/action, bad time format) are silently skipped, same as before.
- Each task displays as "Person: Action" — both in the temporary fade-in banner below the title, and as a row in the persistent on-stage list below the timer (monospace time, left-aligned).
- The most recently due task's row turns bold red; earlier ones revert to plain black, matching your confirmed choices.
